Calculate Remaining Days
How the 90/180 Day Rule Works for UK Passport Holders
Since Brexit, British citizens visiting Europe for holiday or business fall under the non-EU 90/180 day rule across the 29 Schengen member countries. Understanding how this rolling window operates is critical to preventing border issues or overstay penalties.
1. It is a Rolling 180-Day Window (Not a Calendar Year)
The 90 days are counted on a dynamic rolling 180-day window looking back from every single day you are inside the Schengen Area. It does not reset on January 1st or when your passport is renewed.
2. Both Entry and Exit Days Count
Even if you pass through passport control at 11:55 PM, that counts as 1 full day spent in the Schengen zone. Always include both entry and exit calendar days in your calculation.
3. Member Countries Included in the 90-Day Limit
The limit applies across the entire combined Schengen zone, including popular destinations for British tourists: France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Norway.
4. Overstay Penalties for UK Citizens
Border authorities scan passports electronically. Overstaying even by 1 or 2 days can lead to heavy fines, an entry mark in the SIS database, or an entry ban of up to 3 years across all Schengen nations.
